Most families need a mix. The right one depends on who relies on your income and what you already have through work.
Life insurance
Pays a tax-free amount to your beneficiaries if you die, to cover the mortgage, debts, income and your children’s future. Term coverage lasts a set period, such as 10, 20 or 30 years, and usually costs less. Permanent coverage lasts your whole life.
Disability insurance
Replaces part of your income if an illness or injury stops you from working. It is often the most overlooked coverage, especially for the self-employed and anyone whose workplace plan is limited.
Critical illness insurance
Pays a lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a covered condition, such as certain cancers, a heart attack or a stroke. You decide how to use it: treatment, recovery time or keeping up with bills. Covered conditions vary by policy.
How much coverage do you need?
There is no single right number. In your free needs analysis we look at:
- Your mortgage, debts and final expenses
- How many years of income your family would need to replace
- Your children’s education and other goals
- What you already have through work, and what happens to it if you leave your job
- Your budget, so the coverage you choose is one you can keep
Insurance questions we hear often
Isn’t my coverage at work enough?
It may not be. Group coverage is often a fixed multiple of your salary, may not be enough for a family with a mortgage, and usually ends when you leave the job. We’ll look at what you have and whether there’s a gap.
Should I choose term or permanent life insurance?
Term coverage is designed for needs that end, like a mortgage or raising children, and usually costs less. Permanent coverage suits lifelong needs, such as estate planning or final expenses. Many families use a combination.
How much does coverage cost?
It depends on your age, health, smoking status, the amount and type of coverage, and the length of the term. We compare options so you can see the trade-offs before you decide.
Will I need a medical exam?
Not always. Requirements depend on your age, the amount of coverage and the insurer. Some policies only need a health questionnaire. All coverage is subject to the insurer’s approval and policy terms.
